I AM: The Light of the World

“Jesus spoke to the people again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me won’t walk in darkness but will have the light of life.’” John 8:12 Common English Bible (CEB)

The summer solstice was this past weekend. Summer has officially begun! The day was long and the sun shined in Campbell until late into the evening. My mood lifted when I stepped outside into the light. I felt warm and happy and the stresses of the day disappeared.

Jesus has the same effect on us. Jesus said “I am the light of the world.” In Jesus, we stand in brightness. And while life may not be easy, Jesus makes us more assured.

“God is light and in him there is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5 CEB)

Jesus sheds light not only on us but on all that surrounds us. We don’t see light. The light illumines what is around us. When we are in God’s light, we see things differently.

“During the journey, as Saul approached Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven encircled him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice asking him, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you harassing me?’

Saul asked, “Who are you, Lord?”

“I am Jesus, whom you are harassing,” came the reply. “Now get up and enter the city. You will be told what you must do.” (Acts 9:3-6 CEB)

How have you been converted by experiencing God’s light in your life?

What is God shedding light on in your life and community this day?

If in God there is no darkness, how can we bring light to our world?

How does God call us to bear witness to - “to tell in the light,” if you will - what we find there?

What do you see differently today?

How can you share good news and light with others?

May we stand changed in the light of the One who is Light. Amen.
